Once your sod is installed, your new lawn will be your pride and joy. But at The Sod Man, we understand that installation is only the first part of the equation. To ensure your lawn stays lush and green for years to come, you need to maintain the sod properly so it can properly take root.
We’re here to help! Here are some quick tips that will give your sod the best chance to thrive:
● Water Well: Ensure your sod is well-watered before and after installation. Water the soil before the sod is laid down, then follow a regular watering schedule for at least the first month. Our team would be happy to give you specific watering tips based on the species of grass and the time of installation.
● Don’t Overwater: While frequent watering is important for new sod, it’s equally important not to water your sod too much. About five minutes after you water your sod, check the bottom of the soil. If it’s still soggy, you’re probably overwatering.
● Avoid Walking on the Sod: You want to give the sod plenty of time to take root, and walking on it is likely to damage the sod. Keep family members, visitors, customers, pets, and others off the sod until at least the first mow (typically two to three weeks after installation).
● Fertilize Regularly: Your sod should be first fertilized about five weeks after it’s installed and regularly thereafter. A local lawn care company can help you set up a fertilization schedule and ensure your sod gets the nutrients it needs when it needs them.
We install five species of turf grass: zenith zoysia, fescue, centipede, Bermuda, and zeon zoysia. While the tips above are great for general information, each species has its quirks. But luckily, we have you covered. Download the handy PDFs to get specific instructions for caring for your particular sod!
